Overview
ANA
is an organization of the people of Nepali origin in the Americas and
international friends of Nepal. ANA was founded on July 1983 in New
York and Incorporated in Washington DC in 1983 as a non-profit tax
exempt organization. Since its inception ANA has grown steadily as an
international organization attracting a diverse membership that
includes resident Nepalis in the Americas and many other international
scholars, scientists, outdoor enthusiasts, and philanthropists who
share an interest in the Nepali Culture.
Purpose
The
purpose of the exclusively educational and charitable Association of
Nepalis in the Americas is to promote preservation of Nepali identity
and culture in the Americas, to foster cordial relations among Nepalis
and Americans, and to demonstrate the effectiveness of the
participation of Nepali-Americans in the communities they live in.
Goals
- Continuity and promotion of the cultural, religious, linguistic, historical, and educational heritage of Nepal
- Promotion and encouragement of dance, drama, and the art heritage of Nepal
- Recreation and meditation center for Nepalis, Americans, and International guests
- Research library and referral materials
- Conference and meeting place for Nepalis and Friends of Nepal
- Information for tourism, white water rafting, mountaineering, and trekking
- ANA scholarship project for Nepali students from remote areas of Nepal
- Nepali safe drinking water and medical assistance program for rural Nepal
- Nepal emergency and disaster fund
- Nepali school project for development of more schools in Nepal
Major Accomplishments
- ANA
has hosted over 20 annual conventions on July 4th weekends starting in
1983. These conferences have attracted hundreds of Nepalis living in
the Americas and from abroad and friends of Nepal.
- ANA
celebrated "Nepal Heritage Night" with Sir Edmund Hillary in support of
The ANA Cultural Center and its charitable projects with a dinner
reception at the Sheraton Premiere Hotel in Vienna, Virginia on June
7th, 1988.
- ANA succcessfully arranged and proudly
presented "Maha Sanchar," an accomplished Nepali cultural troupe in
various cities of the US, including Kansas City, Washington D.C.,
Cornell University, Boston, Orlando, and New York City. This was the
first cultural troop to exhibit their performance in the United
Nation's Hammarskjold Auditorium in the summer in 1990.
- ANA
has unveiled the third edition of its cookbook entitled, The Nepal
Cookbook, published by Snow Lion Publications of New York. Check in
your local bookstore for a copy!
- Nepal Educational
and Cultural Center, a 3.4 acre property with three bedrooms, was
purchased in 1996. ANA is planning to build a Nepali center on this
property with temples dedicated to Lord Pashupatinath and Lord Buddha,
a meeting hall for Nepalis to gather and celebrate festivals,
classrooms and displays. The property is a beautiful natural park with
tall trees and vivid flora. Bhumi Puja has already been performed and
initial architectural designs have been submitted. Traditional Bhumi
Puja was performed on October 18, 1996 by Swami Sugunendra.
